Biltmore Tower
Los Angeles, California
Project Size: 400,000 sf, office, 700-room hotel
Two bold changes have transformed the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles:
Two wings of hotel rooms, 175,000 sf, converted to office space and a
new 150,000 sf 24-story office campanile constructed at the corner of
Fifth Street and Grand Avenue, above a
165,000 sf parking structure. The design attempted to match materials
of the venerable structure. Six of the original eight-color brick mix
were still available, with limestone and granite on two sides of the tower,
inviting pedestrians and vehicles through a landmark arch and into a large
L-shaped porte cochere. The unique top of the tower serves as a transition
from the hotel's historical identity to contemporary form embracing Grand
Avenue and the open space east of the Public Library.
